Full-body scanners, biometric scanners, X-ray scanners…the list of airport technologies ready to scan passengers and staff goes on and on. With so many new technologies being tested on passengers at airports, you might reasonably think that they would get tired, or even afraid, of new alarming-sounding products in the offing.
Take for example the latest scanners from Morpho Detection, which can detect a wide range of explosives and metal shoe-borne threats using multiple integrated technologies, including Ion Trap Mobility Spectroscopy, Quadrupole Resonance and active metal weapons detection.
Enough to put off even the most intrepid traveller you might think. In reality, however, probably not...Because for passengers, convenience is often king and these scanners from Morpho are a new type of shoe scanner which could provide welcome relief and potentially shorter queues for passengers.

The news for the biometrics industry, is that biometrics have been sidelined from the company's latest version. The new scanners are being trialed at Indianapolis International Airport (IND), but do not include biometrics, despite the fact the last version did.
According to Morpho, the new ShoeScanner is the next-generation evolution of the former SRT (Secure Registered Traveler) Kiosk. That version incorporated explosives detection and shoe scanning technologies along with biometric identification. The next-generation ShoeScanner is stand alone and does not incorporate biometric technology.
“The Indianapolis data collection will take us one step closer to the checkpoint of the future – armed with real-world data, we are confident we can deliver highly effective shoe scanners that provide a fast, convenient solution for air travelers,” said John C. Hill, chief technology officer, Morpho Detection.
No doubt biometric scanning devices will continue to roll out at airports around the world, but Morpho clearly sees having the shoe scanning seperate will potentially open up more opportunities than an integrated device.
