Memorial Hospital taps DigitalPersona

11/08/10

Ohio’s Memorial Hospital of Union County has selected DigitalPersona’s Pro endpoint protection suite to help meet the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements for secure access to electronic health records (EHR).
Memorial’s IT staff are currently rolling out the technology to more than 600 employees. In deploying its secure EHR, Memorial Hospital will be eligible to secure federal grant dollars
DigitalPersona says the centrally-managed biometric authentication solution will enable the hospital to prevent unauthorised access to confidential patient records. It has also helped the hospital reduce IT costs from password resets.
According to DigitalPersona, the hospital required a solution that would provide authorised users with quick, secure access to PCs in compliance with HIPAA. Authorised users include Memorial Hospital’s full-time employees as well as contingent employees who only work at the hospital two or three days each month. Given that they work at many hospitals and have to remember logins for many different systems, contingent staff traditionally have the highest password reset rate.
The DigitalPersona solution includes DigitalPersona Pro Workstation software, DigitalPersona Pro Server for Active Directory, DigitalPersona Pro ID Server and U.are.U Fingerprint Readers. DigitalPersona Pro Server integrates with the hospital’s Active Directory infrastructure. DigitalPersona Pro ID Server enables users to log-in from any fingerprint enabled computer within the hospital. Memorial Hospital will provide users with fingerprint authentication to all enterprise applications including Claims Administrator, Pathways Compliance Advisor, Embla, Medtuity, IMPAX, OBIX, Horizon Patient Folder, Horizon Business Folder, Softlab, Paragon and Systoc.
HIPAA was enacted during the Clinton presidency in 1996. Part of the act was devoted to administrative simplification, requiring the establishment of national standards for electronic health care transactions and national identifiers for providers, health insurance plans, and employers. It also addressed the security and privacy of health data.
