ID Bill committee stage report released

20/08/10

The UK parliament has published a committee stage report on the Identity Documents Bill, providing a fascinating insight into how the new coalition government has been debating its contents with the opposition.
The report confirms the bill will abolish identity cards and delete the associated data from the National Identity Register. It also highlights the fairly heated debate about compensation for existing ID card holders and confirms that the fewer than 15,000 individuals who had signed up for the cards by June this year will not be compensated for the £30 they paid.
It reveals the bill will also retain measures to combat the production and possession of false ID documentation and allow for information sharing in connection with passport applications andwhether documents should be denied or withdrawn from certain applicants.
It confirms that no amendments were made to the bill, although the opposition had tabled a proposal to allow existing ID cards to remain valid. Its new clause to permit the continuation of ID pilot schemes at two airports was also defeated.
