South Korea has expanded its use of biometrics at the border with news that foreign nationals suspected of using fake identities to enter the country will have their fingerprints and face scanned at all international air and sea ports in the country. One of the reasons for the move is to tighten security ahead of the G20 summit to be held in Seoul in November.
Taking the process even further, by the end of the year all foreigners will have to submit to biometric checks.
In addition, starting from June next year, foreigners who stay for more than 90 days will need to have their fingerprints and photographs registered with the government.
In a separate piece of news, the Korean Immigration Service has just announced a new biometric-based automated immigration system for permanent foreign residents and foreign investors.
The new Automated Immigration Clearance system - based on fingerprint technology - will allow foreigners who have permanent residency along with those on D-8 investor visas to enter the country via unmanned auto gates using their ePassports.
This system is expected to make re-entry to Korea faster and easier.
