Silicon Valley-based semiconductor design and manufacturing Cypress has joined the Fast IDentity Online (FIDO) Alliance as part of plans to ensure that upcoming fingerprint reader solution it is designing meets the body’s standards.

In 2014, Cypress announced a strategic partnership with Norwegian firm IDEX ASA to produce fingerprint reader solutions. Cypress will offer the solutions alongside its capacitive touch-sensing portfolio.

"We are excited to welcome our newest sponsor member Cypress," said Dustin Ingalls, FIDO Alliance president. "The FIDO vision of universal strong authentication promises better security, enhanced privacy, more commerce and expansion of services throughout digital industries. Cypress's addition to our Alliance supports our industry goal to make user authentication easier and safer for all parties."

"Joining the FIDO Alliance marks another significant step in the development of our fingerprint reader solutions," said Hassane El-Khoury, Executive Vice President of the Programmable Solutions Division at Cypress.

"Along with our expertise with capacitive touch-sensing technology and the broad adoption of our extensive touch portfolio for mobile devices and other applications, our FIDO membership positions Cypress to make quick inroads in the fingerprint reader market. We envision a very strong product roadmap that will meet the rapidly growing demand for personal security."
