2015 has been a remarkable year for the biometrics industry with an increasing number of consumer smart devices supporting biometrics out-of-the-box. Almost every new flagship smartphone shipped in 2015 comes equipped with built-in biometric authentication with touch-style fingerprint sensors dominating the market - Goode Intelligence forecasts over 500 million smart mobile devices available with integrated fingerprint sensors by the end of 2015.[1]

There are also positive signs that other modalities including iris, voice, face and eye-vein are either being integrated by the device manufacturer or supported through software deployments to offer multi-modal biometric authentication that is suitable for a wide range of applications including payments, banking, healthcare and enterprise use.

Biometrics for authentication and identity applications is also beginning to find its way onto the latest generation of wearable devices with modalities such as heart-rate (ECG) being suitable for the support of persistent, continuous, user identification for a wide range of applications including the possibility of supporting converged logical / physical identity.

2016 will see an acceleration of the trends that have shaped the biometrics industry for 2015 with mobile dominating consumer biometrics deployments and greater emphasis on matching security to the context of the application; a move away from one-size-fits-all biometric authentication platforms. Biometric authentication platforms must be robust and support a range of applications with differing privacy and security requirements. Look out for biometric authentication platforms, Biometrics 2.0, that offer true end-to-end identity lifecycle management and ensures proof of identity during the enrollment phase, ensuring that an imposter cannot enrol their biometric as a legitimate user. The IEEE BOPS 2410-2015 [2] standard shows a lot of promise in this area.
