Australia mulls face recognition for age verification

Canberra has proposed using facial recognition scans to verify the age of internet users seeking to access pornography and gaming websites.

The Department of Home Affairs  informed a parliamentary committee that comparing facial scans with data already in government hands – such as driver’s license or passport photos – could “assist in age verification” for individuals attempting to access controversial websites.

"Home Affairs is developing a Face Verification Service which matches a person’s photo against images used on one of their evidence of identity documents to help verify their identity," the government agency wrote in a recent regulatory filing.

"This could assist in age verification, for example by preventing a minor from using their parent's driver licence to circumvent age verification controls," it wrote to a parliamentary committee investigating the idea.
