Canadian watchdog to overseee AI firm probe

Canada's Privacy Commissioner Daniel Therrien has led a probe of f.acial recognition technology supplied by Clearview AI.

The investigation follows media reports that claiming the company is collecting and using biometric information without consent. 

B.C. information and privacy commissioner Michael McEvoy and Therrien, along with their counterparts in Alberta and Quebec, will examine whether the organisation’s practices are in compliance with federal and provincial privacy legislation.

Several police forces in Ontario have publicly acknowledged they have used Clearview's services, including the police force in Toronto, Canada's most populous city.

The privacy commissioners of Canada and of the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta and Québec will jointly investigate whether the company's practices are in compliance with Canadian privacy legislation.
