Greece mulls securer biometric identity cards

The migrant crisis in Europe and the terrorist attacks in Paris have put added pressure on Greece to improve the security of its identity cards, with a group of experts meeting to decide if new features should be added.

A committee of experts is currently examining the upgrade of Greek identity cards so they meet European Union and US standards.

Kathimerini reported on Monday that Citizens’ Protection Ministry officers are considering that that the new version should include a microchip that will store biometric data.

The body estimates that this upgrade to existing ID cards is estimated at more than 80 million euros.
