Senior officials in Bangladesh have launched a biometric database for prisoners that will store the data from 68 prisons across the country.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal inaugurated the digital database, named the “Rab [Rapid Action Battalion ] Prison Inmate Database” on Sunday, reported The Daily Sun.

The database will link name, address and profession information to fingerprint and iris data.

The home minister said the new online database will be connected with immigration points to prevent criminals from leaving the country using fake names.

“The elite force has already preserved data about 45,000 criminals who are serving jail terms across the country, and more names would be added,” he said.

RAB Director General Benazir Ahmed said the database will help exchange information between the prisons from one part to other part of the country.

“The database will also help proper management of the prisoners. It would help reduce the rate of crime.”
