The organisers of the annual European Union and European Association for Biometrics conference say it will focus this year on research and innovation in biometrics and digital identity.

The European Union and EAB organises its annual conference (EAB-RPC 2018) to update its stakeholders on research and innovation in biometrics and digital identity. The 5th edition of the EAB Research Projects Conference (EAB-RPC) will take place on the 24th and 25th of September 2018, at the premises of Fraunhofer IGD in Darmstadt, Germany.

The conference is organized by the European Association for Biometrics (EAB) in cooperation with the Joint Research Center (DG JRC) of the European Commission, through its Cyber and Digital Citizens' security Unit. The EAB-RPC 2018 will be co-located with the EAB Research Award and the IEEE BIOSIG Conference, later that same week. The conference is currently the largest event

This year's edition will include the participation of on research funded by the European Union in the numerous EU-funded research projects, such as: area of Biometrics and Identity Management.

It will also include the participation of numerous EU-funded research projects, such as: BODEGA, LIGHTest, IDENTITY, SWAN, AMBER, iBorderCtrl, SMILE, PROTECT, LETSCROWD, TRESSPASS, CybSPEED, FOLDOUT, FACCESS, Smart-Trust, Signa 2.0 and QuardCard.

EAB- RPC has become a key forum in Europe where attendees can simultaneously promote research carried out in biometrics, forge new links and networks, and identify the appropriate partners for possible future project applications. Last year's edition welcomed over 100 participants from academia, industry and public institutions.

The organiser noted that researchers and industry from all over Europe will present the advances achieved in these projects, provide updates on how results from finished projects are being currently used to improve biometric technology and eventually give an insight into the future of biometric research.

"The conference will offer a holistic and comprehensive perspective of the status of biometric and identity management technology in Europe with the participation of the following stakeholders: researchers, end-users (Frontex), industry (different SME projects will be presented in this edition), policy makers (EDPB) and Managers of large IT-systems (eu-LISA)," wrote the EAB.

The conference will also include a keynote speech by the Executive Officer of eu-LISA on the large biometric systems being deployed at European level such as the new AFIS in SIS-II, or the existing ones in VIS or EURODAC. The conference will also feature a round-table that will tackle the always controversial issue of data privacy and data protection, focused on the field of biometrics, in the light of the new European General Data Protection Regulation.
